Summer is a great time for group outings, church picnics, reunions and more, but nothing can make those events more memorable than taking on the Bedford Y’s Challenge Course.
In what may be a surprise for many local residents, this program has actually made Bedford a special destination for many different groups.
“We’ve been going since May 30th with groups coming here nearly every day of the week,” said Dwayne Abbott, Outdoor Adventure and Sports Director. “Groups like the Honeytree Early Learning Center, Jefferson Forest Marching Band and even other YMCA’s around the area have been here -- some even multiple times this year.”
With a 45-foot tall climbing wall, high ropes course, 250-foot long zip line and even a giant swing that traverses a 50-foot arc, there are any number of activities that can be done alone or together.
One of the newest additions is an Outdoor Aerial Adventure Course, which includes obstacles such as the Musical Chairs, Jellyfish and the Chaplin Rings.
For youth groups, businesses, clubs and other organizations, programs can be custom-tailored to specific needs.
The benefits cited include teamwork, communication, problem solving and bonding.
An Indoor Challenge Ropes course is also available. Elements include the Dangling Duo, Firecracker Ladder, Knotted Rope Ladder, the Centipede, an Indoor Climbing Wall and more.
For individuals and small groups, the rates start at $25 per staff member per hour for each element. Group rates are also available by contacting Dwayne Abbott at the Bedford YMCA for custom pricing.
Courses can be tailored to ang group’s needs and are also suitable for almost any age group . In addition, the YMCA staff can also travel  outside to provide group initiative activities at almost any site.
