Bedford Metro headed towards DYB AAA World Series in Louisiana

By Rod Short

Life has some interesting twists and turns . . . and nowhere was that more evident than Thursday night at the DYB State Tournament in Forest.

Sponsored by the Dixie Youth Baseball, the Bedford Parks and Rec Department and the Forest Youth Athletic Association, this nearly week-long tourney featured 10 teams from across the Commonwealth.

In the end, it all came down to two teams; Bedford metro and Rustburg. By the time the final out had been called and the infield dust had settled, one team had lost, but two teams actually won.

In this odd turn of events, Bedford Metro was defeated for the second night in a row in this double-elimination tournament by a 5-3 score. With two outs, the bases loaded and the winning run on first, everyone held their breath as Rustburg took the final out on strikes to win the game.

Afterwards, it was revealed that not one, but both teams would be going to the DYB World Series.

Bedford Metro will be representing the Commonwealth of Virginia at the Dixie Youth AAA World series for Division 1 tournament in Ruston, LA beginning Saturday, Aug. 3. Rustburg is headed to the Division 2 AAA series in Lumberton, NC, which begins Friday, July 26.

This marks the first year that the DYB World Series is split into two different playing levels to allow a more competitive tournament environment for smaller leagues.
