Staunton River hosts big-time volley clinic

By Mike Forster

Footballers weren’t the only ones having summer fun last week.

Although they were inside, Staunton River-area volleyballers had a blast, refining their game under the tutelage of Virginia Tech assistant coach Aaron Shepardson.

River Head Coach Rich Northrup arranged Shepardson’s visit and assembled the players.  He seemed happy with the results.

“This camp puts more time in on volleyball fundamentals and mechanics,” noted Northrup.  “This was good for us, because of the loss of our six starters from last year and the fact that we will be young and small this year.”

Shepardson patiently explained and demonstrated sound mechanics.

He brought a lot of credibility to the mix.  In addition to coaching at Virginia Tech, his resume includes playing for Baylor and on the U.S. National Team, as well as for teams in Indonesia and Belgium.  He also coached at the University of Florida and American University.
