• Samuel W. Cundiff, 81, Vinton

        Samuel Wallace Cundiff, 81, of Vinton, went to be with the Lord on Monday, Aug. 3, 2009.  He spent his final days in his home surrounded by family and loved ones.  Wallace was born in Huddleston, Virginia on June 20, 1928. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Benjamin Cundiff and Daisy Lemon Thompson Cundiff, and these brothers and sisters:  W. E. (Bill) Cundiff, Irvin Cundiff, Troy Cundiff, Maurice Cundiff, Daisy Stevens, Pauline Woodford, Helen Stevens, and Christine Cundiff.

  • Faye F. Tucker, 73, Forest

        Faye Murphy Francis Tucker, 73, of Forest, peacefully transitioned from this life to eternal life at 2:15 p.m. on Thursday, July 30, 2009, at Virginia Baptist Hospital with her daughter and daughter-in-law by her side. 

        She was born in Pittsylvania County on Nov. 25, 1935, a daughter of the late Elbert Murphy and Selma Owen Murphy.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Malcolm Graham Francis, and two brothers, Roland Murphy and Herbert “Jake” Murphy. 

  • Robert H. Stuart, 68, Bedford

        Robert Henry Stuart, 68, of Bedford, died Sunday, Aug. 2, 2009 in Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.  Born Aug. 2, 1941 in Ayre, MA, a son of the late Robert Emerson Stuart and Helen Louise Stuart VanLeer. 

        He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Monroe, NC and a retired mechanic with US Air. 

  • Sneed T. Adams, Sr., 94, Bedford

        Sneed Taylor Adams, Sr., 94, of Bedford, passed away Thursday, July 23, 2009. He was born on Sept. 14, 1914, in Franklin County, a son of the late Tony Garfield Adams and Ada Frantz Adams.

  • Thomas A. Chappelle, 88, Bedford

        Thomas Ashford Chappelle, 88, of  Bedford, passed away Wednesday, July 22, 2009, at  Bedford County Nursing Home.  He was born on Wednesday, July 13, 1921, in Bedford Co., a son of the late Benjamin Franklin Chappelle and Dorothy Keen Chappelle. 

        He was also preceded in death by his devoted wife of sixty-four years, Emily Lee Johnson Chappelle, as well as seven brothers and sisters, David Chappelle, James Chappelle, Robert Chappelle, Alice Beatty, Barbara Heller, Camile Rice and Esther Zieber. 

  • Timothy W. Mehaffey 56, Roanoke

        Timothy Wade Mehaffey, 56, of Roanoke, died Thursday, July 23, 2009, in the University  of Virginia Medical Center.  He was born in Plant City, FL on Aug. 27, 1952, a son of the late Rudolph Lee Mehaffey, Jr. and Evelyn Wade Killian Mehaffey. 

        He was survived by his brother, Michael Lee Mehaffey and his wife, Leslie of Bedford; his partner, Milas Laney of Roanoke, a niece, Tara Mehaffey and a nephew, Jeff Vigneau. 

        A graveside service was held 2 p.m. Saturday in Greenwood Cemetery. 

  •     Lorene Dare Johnson, 91 of  Bedford and formerly of Huddleston, passed away Wednesday, July 22, 2009, at Carriage Hill Retirement Home.  She was born on Sunday, Nov. 18, 1917, in Bedford Co., a daughter of the late Alvin Leroy Nichols and Jennie Lou Roberts Nichols. 

        She was also preceded in death by her husband, Arnold Duval Johnson.

        She was a retired employee of Rubatex Corporation and was a faithful member of Mentow Baptist Church.

        Frank “Pepe” Dodd Mason, 85, of Evington, passed away Friday, July 17, 2009 at Virginia Baptist Hospital. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Beulah Marie Dudley Mason.

        Mary Frances Menard Alexander, a former resident of Slidell, LA and current resident of Bedford, for the past ten years, passed away on Friday, July 10, 2009. Age 74 years.

        Beloved wife of the late Rodney Alexander. Mother of Eric Rex Alexander. Daughter of the late Gladys Kerner Menard and Paul A. Menard, Sr. Sister of Paul A. Menard,Jr., Robert L. Menard and G. Sidney Menard. Also survived by nieces and nephews.

        Mary Frances was a graduate of Loyola University School of Music.
