• Roy L. Rider, 59, Moneta

        Roy Leonard Rider, 59, of Moneta, died Monday, April 13, 2009, at Roanoke Memorial  Hospital.  He was born Bedford County on May 26, 1949, a son of Helen Rider of Moneta, and the late Harry L. Rider. 

        He is survived by his wife of 33 years Vicky Rider; two sons, Lee Rider and wife Heather; Scottie Rider; two brothers Danny Rider and wife Liz; Robert Rider and wife Joann; a sister Debbie Rider; two step grandchildren Molly and Haley; several nieces and nephews.

        Mrs. Shirley Gray Wilson of Bedford, died Sunday at her home after a courageous battle with numerous illnesses. Her family cared for her needs and were with her every step of the way.

  • Christopher T. Freeman, 39, Moneta

        Christopher Todd Freeman, 39, of Moneta, died Monday, April 20, 2009.  He was born Sunday, Jan. 25, 1970, in Roanoke, a son of the late James Kenneth Freeman and Loretta Lea Ferrell Freeman. 

        Christopher was a member of EastLake Community Church and the Chamblissburg Masons. Christopher attended American Flyers and was rated a commercial pilot on twin-engine aircraft. He enjoyed the outdoors and loved volunteering for the Moneta Fire Department.

  • James O. Arthur, 76, Bedford

        James Ottie Arthur, 76 of  Bedford passed away Saturday, April 11, 2009, at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital.  He was born on Monday, April 10, 1933, in Bedford Co., a son of the late Charlie Kent Arthur and Pearl Susan Moran Arthur. 

        He was a retired employee of Rubatex Corporation and was also a farmer. He was a member of Timber Ridge Bapitst Church and the American Legion and served in the U. S. Army National Guard.

        Deborah Brown Gross, 42, of Thaxton, went to her heavenly home on Tuesday, April 7, 2009. She was preceded in death by her father, Raymond Brown; and grandparents, Eural H. Sigmon, and Harold and Pauline King.

        Mrs. Gross was a 1984 graduate of Liberty High School.

  • Carrie S. Neely, 80, Goode

        Carrie (Peggy) Naomi Shoffner Neely, 80, of Goode, died Sunday, April 12, 2009, in Lynchburg General Hospital.  Born July 21, 1928, in Graham, N.C., a daughter of the late Ervin L. Shoffner and Vera Mann Shoffner. 

        Peggy was a retiree of General Electric.

  • Samuel R. Parks, Jr., 81, Big Island

        Samuel Robert “Bobby” Parks, Jr., 81, of Big Island, died Tuesday, April 7, 2009, in Virginia Baptist Hospital.  Born Oct. 15, 1927, in Bedford County, a son of the late Samuel Robert Parks, Sr. and Mary Lucille Overstreet Parks. 

        In addition to his parents, Bobby was preceded in death by a brother, Douglas O. Parks. 

  • Linda R. Love, 54, Bedford

        Linda Robertson Love, 54, of  Bedford, passed away Tuesday, April 7, 2009, at Bedford Memorial Hospital.  She was born on Sunday, Aug. 15, 1954, in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Walter Franklin Robertson and Lettie “Kat”  Overstreet Robertson. 

        She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Leonard Robertson and Roger Robertson.

        She was bus driver for Bedford County Public Schools for over 20 years.

  • Ellen H. St. John, 91, Big Island

        Ellen Mae Hawks St. John, 91 of Big Island, went to be with her Lord April 7, 2009.

        She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 55 years, James Edward St. John, her mother and father, Evelyn and John Hawks, and sister, Margaret Updike.
