• Irvin D. Walker, Lynchburg

        Irvin Duval Walker of Lynchburg, formerly of Bedford, departed this life March 4, 2009. Born March 14, 1922, in Baltimore, MD, he was preceded in death by the love of his life and wife of 65 years, Geraldine D. Walker and his parents, Elizabeth Marshall Walker and Irvin Russet Walker.

  • Colton W. Knick, 15, Bedford

        Colton Wayne Knick, 15, of Bedford, died Wednesday, March 4, 2009, at his residence.  Born Dec. 5, 1993, in Lynchburg, a son of Larry Wayne Knick, Jr. and Tracy Lynn Mitchell Knick. 

        Colton was a member of Trinity Baptist Church where he was active in the youth group.   He was an outstanding baseball player who recently became a member of the Liberty High School Varsity baseball team.  In addition to his passion for baseball, he was an avid hunter.

  • Philip A. White, Vero Beach, FL

        Philip Ashby White of Vero Beach, Florida died Feb. 26, 2009. He was born on June 14, 1923, in Chase City. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Lewis White (Vixella Rucker), Cifax.

  • Mary L. Markham, 87, Bedford

        Mary Lavera Markham, 87, of Bedford, died Thursday, March 5, 2009, from complications of Parkinson’s disease.  She was born Oct. 28, 1921, the daughter of the late Wallace Leighton Mayhew and Lilly Hill Mayhew. 

        She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Hobart Francis Markham. 

        She was preceded in death by her brother, Wallace Leighton Mayhew, Jr.

  • Dewey Chaffin, 64, TN

        Dewey Lee Chaffin, 64, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, Feb. 23, 2009 at Wellmont – Holston Valley Medical Center, Kingsport, TN. He was born in Russell County, VA; son of the late Albert and Grace Lyttle Chaffin.

        He was a member of Stallard Memorial Church. He was owner and operator of Chaffin Excavating in Bedford County for over 20 years. He was in the 101st Airborne Division of the United States Army. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Sue Newton, Frances Bryant, and Anna Couch.

  • Gertrude Cobbs

        On Feb. 28, 2009, after a brief illness, God called Gertrude Cobbs from labor to rest.     She was preceded in death by her son, Willie Lee Cobbs.

        She is survived by her daughter, Marilyn Dabney, a grandson whom she reared as her own, Deontae Cobbs, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  She is also survived by four brothers, Eddie Bryant, Freddie Bryant, Roy Bryant, and Todd Bryant; five sisters, Reba Wright, Sarah Tyler, Verna Bryant, Lynda Green, and Susan Gail Burnette; and her devoted friend, Sam Ballou.

  • Garrison T. Lockwood, Lynchburg

        Garrison “Garry” Tankard Lockwood, died peacefully Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2009 at Westminster-Canterbury in Lynchburg.

        He was the devoted husband of Hazel Frances Williams Lockwood for over 64 years. He was born on Sept. 7, 1920, a son of the late Oscar Dudley Lockwood and the late Cora Glace Lockwood.

  • Samuel B. Creasy, Jr., 83, Bedford

        Samuel Buford “S. B.” Creasy, Jr., 83, of  Bedford, passed away Friday, Feb. 27, 2009 at  Bedford Memorial Hospital.  He was born on Friday, Aug. 7, 1925 in the Bunker Hill community of Bedford Co., a son of the late Samuel Buford Creasy, Sr. and Ariadne Withrow Creasy.

        David “Bubba” House, 37, went home to be with the Lord on Feb. 24, 2009.  David was born Aug. 13, 1971 in Rocky Mount, NC to Roger House of Franklinton, NC and Becky Johnson and husband Rodger of Big Island.

  • Garland D. Nester, 64, Montvale

        Garland Daniel Nester, 64, of  Montvale, passed away Friday, Feb. 27, 2009 at Bedford Memorial Hospital.  He was born on Thursday, April 27, 1944 in Bedford Co., a son of the late John Nester and Mary Etta Overstreet Nester. 

        He was an employee of Branch Highways.
