  • Toni D. Cash, 54, Bedford

    Miss Toni Darnell Cash, 54, of Bedford, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2008. She was born in Bedford on Jan. 25, 1954, a daughter of the late James “Buck” Cash, Sr. and Anito Stafford Kiblinger.

    In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her grandparents Quillie and Luther Stafford; a brother Jimmy Lee Cash, and a nephew, James Clarence Cash, III (Jimmy).

  • Norwood M. Burks, Jr., 77, Bedford

    Norwood Marshall Burks, Jr., 77 of Bedford passed away Friday, Oct. 17, 2008, at the Lewis Gale Medical Center. He was born on Wednesday, June 17, 1931, in Bedford County, a son of the late Norwood Marshall Burks, Sr. and Claradeen Hodges Burks.

    He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Bettie Burks Knox.

    He was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church and a life long farmer.

  • James A. Bradley, 71, Vinton

    James Aubrey (Jim) Bradley, 71, of Vinton, died on Monday, Oct. 20, 2008, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Salem. He was born in Bedford County on Dec. 11, 1936, the son of the late George Washington and Nora Ellis Bradley.

    He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Melvin A. (Jack) Bradley and George Lee Bradley; and eight half brothers and sisters.

    He retired from Singer Furniture Company, Hooker Furniture Company and Kroger of Vinton and was a member of Wilson's United Methodist Church.

  • Ruby M. Austin, 83, Huddleston

    Ruby Mason Austin, "Ma Ruby", 83 of Huddleston passed away Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2008, at Virginia Baptist Hospital, after a courageous battle with cancer. Ruby was born on Sunday, March 15, 1925, in Campbell Co., a daughter of the late Eugene and Hattie Mason.

    Ruby was preceded in death by her husband Orville R. Austin and brother E.A. Mason.

    Ruby retired from Klopman/Burlington (ITG) on May 31, 2007, with 50 years of service.

  • Lucille H. Witt, 97, Bedford

    Lucille Hatcher Hughes Witt, 97, of Bedford, died Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2008, in Carilion Bedford Memorial Hospital after a long illness. She was born Jan. 8, 1911, in Bedford Co., a daughter of the late Samual Henry Hatcher and Sallie Lou Vaughan.

    Lucille was an active member of Oakland Methodist Church, in Goode, where she taught Sunday school for many years. Lucille will be remembered for her love and devotion for her family, friends, and neighbors.

  • Dean W. Wilkerson, 86, Bedford

    Dean Watts Wilkerson, 86, of Bedford died Thursday, Oct. 9, 2008, in the V. A. Medical Center in Salem. He was born in Bedford on Nov. 22, 1921, a son of the late Gilbert Watts Wilkerson and Sarah Arrington Wilkerson.

    In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, Earl Thomas Wilkerson, Sr., his sister, Sammy W. Dooley and her husband Thomas J. Dooley, Jr., who was also Dean’s business partner.

  • Jason W. Maxey, 34, Rocky Mount

    Jason William Maxey, beloved son age 34 of Rocky Mount, died Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008, as the result of a tragic automobile accident.

    He was baptized at age 15 in 1989. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy and in the Army National Guard. Jason was a law enforcement officer with the Rocky Mount Police Department where he was presented the MADD award in 2006 and many other awards.

  • Matthew R. Kiefer, 28, Moneta

    Matthew R. Kiefer, 28, of Moneta, died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008, at his residence. Born Feb. 25, 1980, in Montgomery County, Maryland, a loving son to Patricia Ann Sgroia Kiefer and Dennis Anthony Kiefer of Smith Mountain Lake.

    In addition to his parents, Matthew is survived by a brother, James Kiefer of Warren, NJ; a sister, Kelly Dineen of Bayonne, NJ. He was also the proud uncle of twins, Mallory and Brody Dineen of Bayonne, NJ. He also leaves the love of six uncles, eight aunts along with many cousins.

  • Nannye V. Johnson, 95, Bedford

    Mrs. Nannye V. Johnson, age 95, departed this life Oct. 10, 2008, at Bedford Memorial Hospital. She was born in Bedford County on April 8, 1913, to Wallace and Lucy Borden.

    In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by her husband Thomas E. Johnson.

    She was a devoted member of Washington Street Baptist Church. She loved her church dearly and served as Church Clerk, Chairman of the Pastoral Pounding Committee, and was a faithful servant of the Lord serving on the Usher and Trustee Boards until her health failed.

  • Gilbert E. Woodford, Jr., 81, MD

    Gilbert Ernest Woodford, Jr., "Junior", 81, of Easton, MD, and formerly of Bedford County, died Oct. 3, 2008, at Talbot Hospice House after a long courageous battle against cancer. Born March 18, 1927, in Bedford County, he was the son of the late Gilbert Ernest Woodford, Sr. and Lela Mae Wilson Woodford.

    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Una Jones, Myrtle Anderson, Edith Smith and Bessie Johnson and one brother, Kyle "Buster" Woodford.
