• Clay L. Witt, 77, Charlottesville

    Clay Lee Witt, formerly of Bedford, died Sept. 24, 2008, in Veterans Hospital in Richmond. He was preceded in death of his parents Allen and Pearl Witt.

    Surviving are his wife, Lena Witt, his brothers, Allen and Betty Witt, Talmyr and Joy Witt of Bedford, his nieces, Judy Witt and Dale Miller.

  • Richard E. Spradlin, 66, Bedford

    Richard Eugene “Gene” Spradlin, 66, of Bedford, passed away on Monday, Sept. 29, 2008, in Lynchburg General Hospital surrounded by his family. He fought a short but courageous battle with cancer. Eugene was born on May 4, 1942, in Roanoke, a son of Catherine Dooley Spradlin of Bedford and the late Richard Leeland Spradlin.

    In addition to his father he is preceded in death by grandparents, Minnie Hughes and Alex Spradlin and Pearl Trent and Oscar W. Dooley, and a granddaughter, Alisha.

  • Brenda J. Otey, 56, California

    Brenda Joyce Otey, 56, formerly of Goode died Sept. 25, 2008, at her home in San Jose, CA.

    Memorial arrangements will be scheduled at a later date. Bedford Funeral Home is assisting the family with local arrangements.

  • Jack Knighton, 90, Alexandria

    Jack Keith Knighton, who resided at the Goodwin House in Alexandria departed this life on Sept. 26 at the age of 90.

    Jack and his wife, Hazel Knighton, moved to the Goodwin House in 1999 from Bedford and prior to Bedford, Lynchburg.

    Those left to celebrate his memory are Hazel Knighton, his two daughters Jackie Knighton who resides in Norfolk, and Susan Cavanaugh, and her husband d David Cavanaugh, of Alexandria.

  • F. Josephine Heck, 60, Bedford

    F. Josephine Heck, 60, of Bedford, went to be with the Lord Friday, Oct. 3, 2008, in Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Born March 3, 1948, in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Otto Thomas Heck and Mary Magdaline Orange Heck.

    She attended Cool Spring Pentecostal Holiness Church.

    In addition to her parents, Josephine was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Heck and Lula Dooley and three brothers, Otey Heck, Marvin Heck and George Heck.

  • Charles A. Canterman, 85, Bedford

    Mr. Charles Andrew Cantermen,85, of Bedford and formerly of Cherry Hill, NJ., passed away after a long illness Saturday Oct. 4, 2008.

    He was born in Hammonton, NJ, on Jan. 12, 1923. He was one of five children. He served in the Marines during World War II and afterwards began a long career and retired with New Jersey Bell Telephone Co.

    He is preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Lillian Huettelmeyer Cantermen.

  • Shirley P. St. Clair, 70, Bedford

    Shirley Ann Padgett St. Clair, 70, of Bedford, died, Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008, in Oakwood Manor. Born Aug. 24, 1938 a daughter of the late Carson E. Padgett and Dorothy E. Dodd Padgett.

    Shirley is survived by her husband, Ronald Earl St. Clair of Bedford; her children, Virginia Carrol Miller, Katherine Sines, Dawn Marie Sines, Willie L. Miller, III and wife, Debra, Randy Lee Miller and Lisa Renee Miller.

  • Edith F. Witt, 68, Lynchburg

    Edith Fay Witt, 68, of Grace Lodge in Lynchburg, VA, died Sunday, Sept. 21, 2008, at Virginia Baptist Hospital. A daughter of the late Ollie Harris Witt and Elizabeth Rice Wilkes Witt, she was born Feb. 16, 1940.

    Fay was also preceded in death by a brother, Ollie C. Witt.

    She was a member of Oakland United Methodist Church.

  • Morris W. Scott, Sr., 83 Lynchburg

    Morris Winston Scott, Sr., 83, of Lynchburg, died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2008. He was the husband of the late Lovelyn Weeks Scott.

    Mr. Scott was born March 17, 1925, in Bedford, a son of the late Hiram A. Scott and the late Lena Abbott Scott.

    He was the owner and operator of Scott’s 5 & Dime, Past President of Fort Hill Lions Club, a Mason, a Shriner and proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was also a member of Quaker Memorial Presbyterian Church.

  • Arthur B. Ruff, 80, Bedford

    Arthur Boyce Ruff, 80 of Bedford passed away Friday, Sept. 26, 2008, at his residence. He was born on Wednesday, March 28, 1928, in Bedford Co., a son of the late Otis Ruff and Lillie Orange Ruff. He was also preceded in death by his wife of fifty-eight years, Lelia Louise Overstreet Ruff, a daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Billy Walker, and a daughter-in-law, Peggy Bowden Ruff.

    He was a retired employee of the Rubatex Corporation and attended Cool Springs Presbyterian Church. He was also a U. S. Army Veteran having served in the Korean Conflict.
