    Aubrey Eugene Bowling, age 59, of Thaxton, passed away Friday July 4, 2008, at his residence. He was born in Bedford County on June 23, 1949, a son of the late William P. Bowling and Mary Callahan Bowling.

    He was preceded in death by a brother, Alton Sidney Bowling.

    He was a retired employee of Rubatex. He loved NASCAR and country music.

    Born in Plainfield, son of the late Clement B. and Anna V. (Speranza) Higginbotham, he resided in North Plainfield and briefly in South Plainfield before moving to Virginia in 1998.

  • Mary E. Asp, 88, Falls Church

    Mary Elizabeth Asp, 88 of Falls Church, VA, passed away at the INOVA Alexandria Hospital on Friday, June 13 of complications from a 15 year battle with Parkinson’s Disease.

    Mrs. Asp, the daughter of the late Herbert A. and Annis H. Logwood, was born in Wheat’s Valley in Bedford County on Dec. 6, 1919. The oldest of 5 children, she graduated from Bedford High School in 1937.

  • Alice L. Wingfield, 86, Bedford

    Alice Rebecca “Becky” Lockard Wingfield, 86, of Bedford, died Sunday, July 6, 2008, at Oakwood Manor. She was born March 22, 1922, in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Harry Glenn Lockard, Sr. and Mattie Dunn Logan Lockard.

    Becky was a member of Bedford Baptist Church, the Belmont Garden Club and the Bedford International Alliance and was an employee of the former Piedmont Label.

  • George H. Murphy, Jr., January 14, 1935, to July 5, 2008

    Paul "Bear" Bryant once said, "If you believe in yourself and have dedication and pride - and never quit - you'll be a winner. The price of victory is high, but so are the rewards." George H. Murphy, Jr. was driven by these words and adopted them as his philosophy for life.

    Born in Sheffield, Alabama, George played football and baseball at Russellville High School. He graduated from the University of Alabama in 1958 with a degree in Business and Marketing. He was a United States Army veteran.

    Julia Ruth Dye “Judy” Key, 82, of Bedford, died Friday, July 4, 2008, in Bedford Memorial Hospital. She was born in Coeburn, on Nov. 18, 1925, a daughter of the late Ellie Dye and Eva Katherine Jackson Dye.

    In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by four sisters and two brothers; her daughter, Pamela Rose Key Undercoffer and an infant son, John Anson Key.

  • Rufus W. Reed, Jr., 81, Bedford

    Rufus "Slim" Walter Reed, Jr., 81, of Bedford, died Saturday, June 28, 2008, in Oakwood Manor Rehab. He was born Jan. 30, 1927, in Rockville, Connecticut, a son of the late Rufus Walter Reed, Sr. and Ann Belle Reed.

    In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his loving wife of 57 years, Doris Louise Reed. He and his wife were the owner and operators of the Bedford Motel and Slim's CB Shop. Slim loved to work in his yard and fixing things there was nothing he couldn't fix if he put his mind to it.

    Bobbie Jean Orange, 69 of Thaxton passed away Wednesday, June 25, 2008, at her residence. She was born on Wednesday, Aug. 3, 1938, in Bedford Co., a daughter of the late Sonnie Mason Orange and the late Nannie Nester Orange.

    She was a retired employee of Bedford Weaving and was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church.

    Linda Gray Albach, 63 of Huddleston passed away Saturday, June 28, 2008, at Bedford Memorial Hospital. She was born on Monday, Oct. 16, 1944, in Lake Charles, Louisiana, a daughter of the late Thurlow Gray and the late Irene Edwards Gray.

    She was also preceded in death by a brother, Charles Gray.
