• Harriett H. Whitehead, 100, Lynchburg

    Harriett Hall Whitehead, 100, a long time resident of Westminster Canterbury died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2008. Born in Pittsylvania County March 21, 1907, she was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nathan A. Hall and the wife of the late Douglas Jackson Whitehead.

    She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law Mary Anne and Gordon Eubank of Bedford, two grandchildren, Elizabeth and husband T.W. Johnson of Geneva, N.Y., Anne Burnley Eubank and fianc Clinton Gowen of Richmond, and one great-grandchild, Abigail Johnson.

  • Charlotte G. Woodford, 84, Altavista

    Charlotte Gray Woodford, 84, went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, Jan. 19, 2008, at Autumn Care of Altavista. She was the wife of the late Kyle E. Woodford, Sr. Born June 26, 1923, in Bedford, she was the daughter of the late Willie O. Gray and Lillie Gray Cundiff.

  • Dorothy R. McGee, 84, Bedford

    Dorothy R. McGee, 84, of Bedford, died, Thursday, Jan. 17, 2008, at Bedford Memorial Hospital. She was born in Roanoke County on July 31, 1923, daughter of the late William Ross McGee and Claire Mozingo Ross McGee.

    She was a retired teacher at Moneta Elementary School and had served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.

    Her sister, Elsie Juanita McGee, preceded her in death.

    She is survived by a niece, Cheryl G. Clark of Plant City, FL and a nephew, Raymond L. Glover of Knoxville, TN.

  • Peggy Fleenor, 77, Thaxton

    Peggy Fleenor, 77, of Thaxton, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Jan. 16, 2008. She was a daughter of the late Guy Francisco of Wise, and also her mother the late Ada Adams and her step-father the late Sid Adams of Salem.

  • Lyle C. Cheek, Bedford

    Long time owner of the Famous, Inc. in Lynchburg, Lyle Coleman Cheek, died Thursday morning, Jan. 17, 2008, at Bedford Memorial Hospital. He was born on Saturday, Sept. 7, 1929, in Bedford County, a son of the late Clarence R. Cheek and Hettie Sims Cheek.

    After graduating from Bedford High School, he joined the U. S. Army. He served with 31st Infantry Regiment in the Korean Conflict and was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge.

  • James E. Brown, 69, Big Island

    James Everett Brown, 69, of Big Island, died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2008. He was born in Bedford County on Dec. 19, 1938, a son of the late Richard Ashby Brown and Evelyn Dorothy Brizendine Brown.

    He was a member and Deacon of Big Island Baptist Church, a member of the Big Island Rescue Squad and a retired employee of VDOT.

  • Elizabeth J. DeWitt, 77, Bedford

    Elizabeth Dolores Johnson DeWitt, 77, of Bedford, died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2008, at Oakwood Manor Nursing Home. Dolores was born on Aug. 5, 1930, to the late Thomas Lewis Johnson and Mary Kate Williams Johnson of Bedford. She is also preceded in death by her husband, Edison Grey DeWitt.

  • Roger M. Archambo, 62, Goodview

    Roger Milton Archambo, 62, of Goodview, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2008, at his residence. He was born May 4, 1945, in Washington, DC son of the late Arthur Lewis Archambo and Ethel Moyes Archambo.

    He was a veteran of the Viet Nam War, a Baptist and retired auto mechanic.

    He is survived by his daughters, Lisa S. Hoover of Mendon, NY and Tracy White of Charlotte, NC; a brother Terry Archambo of Crestview, FL and his grandmother, Annetta Noyes of Syracuse, NY.

  • Ira H. (Buddy) Crowder, 71, Bedford

    Ira Henry "Buddy" Crowder, 71, of Bedford, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2008, in Bedford Memorial Hospital. He was born on Nov. 20, 1936, in Dante, VA a son of the late William Henry Crowder and Blaine Bernice Ring Crowder. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by two brothers, Lowell and Thomas Crowder.

    Buddy loved his family and his grandchildren were his life. He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church. He also enjoyed helping others through the Bedford Ride.

  • Brandon M. Wheeler, 13, Goodview

    Brandon Michael Wheeler, 13, of Goodview, passed away Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008, at Bedford Memorial Hospital. He was born on Friday, Jan. 14, 1994, in Roanoke, a son of Michael Lynn Wheeler of Goodview and Janet Kay Wheeler of Moneta. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Dalton L. Ellis.

    He was an eighth grade student at Staunton River Middle School.
