    Carey Nelson Abbott, 74, of Goode died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2007, at Avante of Roanoke. He was born in Bedford County, Sept. 16, 1933, a son of the late Lawrence Brown Abbott, Sr. and Ollie Noell Abbott.

    He was preceded in death by two brothers, Lawrence B. Abbott, Jr. and Winston Abbott.

    Nelson was a lifetime farmer, a retired employee of VDOT and a member of Oakland United Methodist Church.

    Gwyneth Elizabeth Miller Pagans Tuck, 90 of Lillington, NC and formerly of Bedford County, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2007, in Benson, NC. She was born on Sept. 14, 1917, in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Daniel Hersey Miller and Bessie Plymale Miller.

    She was preceded in death by her husbands, John Lee Pagans and Roy Edward Tuck; a sister, Hilda DeLong and a brother, Marvin Jacob Miller.

    She was a member of the Pleasant Union Christian Church.

    Byron Adna Hicks, of Roanoke, a true Virginia gentleman, died on Wednesday, November 14, 2007, at the age of 91. He was a much beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, colleague and friend. He was born at Moneta, the son of the late Wesley Peters and Sallie Holland Hicks and moved to Bedford, at the age of 10.

    Doris Myrtle Mitchell Craig, 88, of Bedford, died Thursday, Nov. 15, 2007, in Oakwood Manor Nursing Home. She was born Sept. 14, 1919, in the Hardy community of Franklin County, a daughter of the late Herbert Lester Mitchell and Beulah Myrtle Hannabass Mitchell.

    Doris was a member of Otterville United Methodist Church and a retiree of Mitchell Insurance Agency in Lynchburg.

    Louise M. Nichols, 85 of Bedford passed away Monday, Nov. 5, 2007, at the home of her daughter. She was born on Thursday, April 13, 1922, in Lee County, a daughter of the late Freal Mason Mize and Lizzie Lambert Mize. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Francis Mervin "Nick" Nichols.

    She was a retired employee of Leggett Department Stores.

    Ernest Carey Murray, Lt Col, US Army (Ret.), of Annandale, passed away on Wednesday Oct. 24, 2007, at Fair Oaks Hospital. He was born in Goode to Ernestine Kercheval Murray and Walter Toga Murray. Carey went to New London Academy and graduated from Lynchburg College. He received a Master?s degree from Baylor University.

  • Harry, R. Moore, Bedford

    Captain Harry Russell Moore, (USN Ret.) of Bedford, died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2007. He was born Dec. 28, 1921, at Spratt, Ohio son of the late Harry A. Moore and Blanche Edith Blackstone Moore.

    After graduation from Chandlersville High School, he attended Ohio State University prior to enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1942. In Jan. 12, 1945, Russell Moore married the love of his life, Marcella Virginia Williams, who preceded him in death in June 2001. He was commissioned July 9, 1945.

    Merlin Giles Martin, 85, of Roanoke, went to be with the Lord, Saturday, Nov. 3, 2007. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Otis, Claude, Russell A., Grover L. and Nelson Giles.

    She had retired from Eli Lily after 25 years of service and was a long time member of Colonial Baptist Church, as well as a 25 year member of TOPS #VA 406 Montvale. After many years of traveling with her best friend, Audrey Ferguson, she took great joy in spending time with her one-year old great-grandson, who was the light of her life.

  • Millard A. Bragg, 91, Huddleston

    Millard Arnold Bragg, 91 of Huddleston passed away Friday, Nov. 9, 2007, at Bedford Memorial Hospital. He was born on Saturday, Sept. 9, 1916, in Campbell Co., a son of the late Lewis Andrew Bragg and Eula Bailey Bragg.

    He was a retired employee of the Rubatex Corporation, a farmer and a member of the Bethesda United Methodist Church.

    He was a veteran of World War II having served his country in the Army Air Corps.
