• James M. Ellis. 63, Moneta

        James Melvin “Big M” Ellis, 63, of Moneta, was called home to be with his Lord and Savior, on Feb. 27, 2011. He was born on July 1, 1947, a son of the late James Dalton Ellis and Maydean Fielder Ellis.
        Melvin worked for many companies in his lifetime but his greatest love was helping his brother Danny with their company “Ellis Co. Landscaping and Services.” He was a wonderful husband, father, brother and friend. He also loved playing slow pitch softball with his boys.

  • Eleanor O. Jacobs, 82, Moneta

        Eleanor Elizabeth Overstreet Jacobs, 82, of Moneta, passed away on Friday, Feb. 25, 2011, at her residence. She was a daughter of the late Orville Overstreet and Annabelle Niday Overstreet.
        She is survived by her husband, Elton Moorman Jacobs, Sr.; three daughters, Dawn R. Jacobs, Trisha M. Bradley, Susan K. Jacobs; three sons, Carl Edward Jacobs, Samuel Vincent Jacobs, Elton M. Jacobs, Jr.
        A funeral service was conducted from the graveside on Tuesday, March 1, 2011, at Morgans Baptist Church Cemetery.

  • Kenneth W. Dooley, 58, Roanoke

        Kenneth Wayne “Ken” Dooley, 58, of Roanoke, formerly of Bedford, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2011 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.  Born Sept. 6, 1952 in Bedford, a son of the late Kenneth Odell Dooley and Kathleen Wheeler Dooley.

  • Jacqueline J. Dooley, Vinton

        Jacqueline Marie Judd Dooley, of Vinton, was called home to be with our Lord on Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2011.
        She was a very giving and cherished person to all who knew her. Jacqueline is survived by her parents, Christine and William Judd; sister, Patricia Judd; son, Colby Dooley; former husband, Thomas Dooley; stepdaughter, Teresa Lawhorn and husband Douglas; granddaughter, Olivia Lawhorn; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews.

  • Gabriel A. Beamer, infant

        Gabriel Addison Beamer, infant son of Hannah Christine Beamer and Bradley Austin Freeman, was born and passed away on Thursday, Feb. 24, 2011.
        Although Gabriel did not have a chance to know his earthly family, he was loved and treasured greatly by them. Those left behind to grieve are his father, Bradley Austin Freeman; his mother, Hannah Christine Beamer and her fiancé, Tyler Wright; two aunts, Kelli Beamer and Chelsea Wright, and his grandparents, Patricia and Larry Beamer.

  • Abigail G. Ashwell, 86, Huddleston

        Abigail Girard Ashwell, 86, of Huddleston, passed away Thursday, Feb. 24, 2011 at The Summit Health & Rehab. Center. She was born on Wednesday, Oct. 29, 1924 in Erie, PA, a daughter of the late Robert L. Girard and Catherine Wright Girard. She was also preceded in death by husband, Davis Rudolph Ashwell,  a grandson, James Raymond “Jamie” Ashwell and a sister, Pauline Girard Ricke.  She was a school teacher with the Bedford County School System having retired after 32 years. She was also a member of Huddleston United Methodist Church.

  • Putting an end to the spending spree

    Today, Washington spends $7 million every minute of every hour of every day and to finance this spending addiction the government must borrow over 40 cents of every dollar spent. This has resulted in our national debt exceeding $14 trillion which is over $45,000 for every man, woman and child in America.  It’s this kind of out-of-control spending, skyrocketing deficits, and massive growth in government programs that have increased economic uncertainty and prolonged our unemployment crisis.  

  • Esther V. Fileccia, 84, Forest

        Esther Vazquez Fileccia, 84, of Forest, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2011 at Lynchburg General Hospital.  She was born in New York City on Aug. 13, 1926 a daughter of the late Paul and Conception Vazquez.  She was a communicant of St. Thomas More Catholic Church. 

  • Frank W. Whorley, Bedford

        Frank Wendell Whorley, of Bedford, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2011.  He was born in Bedford Co., a son of the late Aubrey L. Whorley and Zula Jones Whorley. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Lynn Whorley and Gerald Whorley and a sister, Leona Whorley Zimmerman. He was a retired employee of Rubatax Corporation and was a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church for 31 years.

  • Kathleen C. Taylor, 93, Lexington

        Kathleen Edith Carter Taylor, 93, of Lexington, and formerly of Big Island,  died Monday, Feb. 14, 2011 in Havenwood Assisted Living.  She was born June 7, 1917 in Amherst County, a daughter of the late Nannie Belle Burks Carter and William Jess Carter. 

        Kathleen was a member of Big Island United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir.  She was also a member of Big Island Garden Club and Big Island Homemakers Club.
