• Memorial Service for Frank Dexter Boone

        A Memorial Service for “Friends and Family” of Frank Dexter Boone (9/05/43 - 5/26/10) will be held on Saturday, July 24 at 4 p.m. at the “Wyoming” Farm, 1541 Hurricane Drive, Bedford, Virginia.

       Donations can be made to the American Cancer Society, Diabetes Association or the Cobb Humane Society, Marietta, Georgia.

        Philip Paul Thompson, Jr., 72, of Bedford and formerly of Stafford County, died Wednesday, July 7, 2010 in Lynchburg General Hospital.   Born July 23, 1937 in Trenton, New Jersey, a son of the late Sonya and Philip Paul Thompson, Sr. In addition to his parents, Philip was preceded in death by a brother, Richard D. Thompson.

        James Calvin “Jimmy” Wright, 76, of Bedford died Thursday, July 8, 2010 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.  He was born in Bedford County on Feb. 10, 1934, a son of the late Elmo Wright and Jennie Smith Wright.

  • James E. Greenway, 41, Moneta

    James Emmett “Jimmy” Greenway, 41, of Moneta, passed away on Monday, June 28, 2010 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was a son of Virginia Myers Greenway of Bedford and the late James Edward Greenway.         In addition to his mother, he is survived by two daughters, Tiffany L. Greenway, Amber N. Greenway; a son, Jason D. McBride.


        A funeral service was conducted on Friday, July 2, 2010 at Updike Funeral Chapel, Bedford.


  • Theresa C. Haaff, 40, Bedford

        Theresa Ann Cobb Haaff, 40, of Bedford, died on Sunday, June 27, 2010, at her residence. She was born in Bedford, a daughter of Fern Wright Cobb of Lynchburg who survives and the late Thomas Cobb Sr. and also surviving is “Mama Lynn” Sipe, who raised Theresa. Additionally Theresa is survived by her husband, Brian D. Haaff; two children, Duston Glenn Holdren and Brittany Raye Ashten Holdren; four siblings, Thomas, Danny and Jeffery Cobb and Michelle Easterday; and her aunt and uncle, William and Karen Wright.

  • Jimmy G. Hopkins, 85, Bedford

        Jimmy Guy Hopkins, 85, of Bedford, passed away Monday, June 28, 2010 at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital. He was born on Thursday, Jan. 15, 1925 in Bedford Co., a son of the late Guy Edward Hopkins and Cleon Vogol Nance Hopkins. He was also preceded in death by a grandson, Wesley Allan Hopkins.

        He was former owner and operator of Otterburn Inn and was a member of Bedford Presbyterian Church. He was also a U. S. Army veteran having served during World War II.

  • Tracy M. Knick, 42, Bedford

        Tracy Lynn Mitchell Knick, 42, of Bedford, died Monday, June 28, 2010 in Virginia Baptist Hospital. She was preceded in death by her mother, Sylvia Sue Mitchell and her son Colton Knick.

        Tracy was a member of Trinity Baptist Church. She loved her career as a hair dresser, shopping, but most of all she loved her family.

  • George W. Megeath, 89, Bedford

        George Windsor Megeath, 89, Bedford, died Tuesday, June 29, 2010 at the Elks National Home. Born Oct. 16, 1920 in Omaha, NE, a son of the late Ethel Richter Megeath and Windsor Freeman Megeath.

        George was a graduate of Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. He was a retired accountant and a retiree of the U.S. Navy Reserves having served in the Pacific Theatre. He was a member of the BPOE Lodge #2844 in Bedford and a supporter of the Boy Scouts of America.

  • Susan R. Nester, 38, Thaxton

        Susan Ruff Nester, 38, of Thaxton, died Monday, June 28, 2010 at Bedford Memorial Hospital.          She was born in Bedford on Oct. 26, 1971 a daughter of the late Ella Louise Overstreet Ruff and Roger Alfred Ruff and his wife, Diane of Bedford.  In addition to her father she is survived by her husband of 13 years, Jimmy Lee Nester; her daughter, Samantha Marie Nester, a brother, Mike Ruff and his wife, Vickie; a sister, Tammy Biggs; her mother-in-law, Mary Nester; numerous extended family and friends.     

  • Lucille R. Scott, 95, Bedford

        Lucille Frances Robertson Scott, 95, of Bedford, passed away Sunday, July 4, 2010 at the Bedford County Nursing Home. She was born on Wednesday, March 31, 1915 in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Letcher Filmore Robertson and Minnie Blanche Kirby Robertson. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Prentiss Glenwood Scott, Sr., a daughter, Florence S. Lambeth, and two sisters, Winifred R. Fowler and Mary R. Calsetta.

        She was a retired employee at Rubatex Corporation, and was a member of Quaker Baptist Church.
