  • James B. St. Clair, 65, PA

        James B. “Buford” St. Clair, 65, of Myertown, PA, and formerly of Blue Ridge, passed away on Friday, April 30, 2010, at the M.S. Hershey Medical Center, Hershey, PA.  He was the loving husband of Jean M. Boltz St. Clair, and on Saturday, May 1, they would have celebrated their 39th wedding anniversary.

  • Thomas B. Hall, Sr., Hampton

        Thomas Benton Hall, Sr., died on Sunday, April 25, 2010.  He was born on June 24, 1924 in Mount Airy, NC to Revedie Charlie Hall and Mary Alice Tate Hall.  He was the twelfth of fifteen children. Tom served during WWII on the Battleship Washington.  He was a printing pressman at Sturgis Newport Business Forms.  He owned and operated Hall Printing Service.  After retirement, he moved to Bedford and owned and operated Hillside Mobile Home Park.

  • Helen J. Lacy, 72, Bedford

        Helen Johnson Lacy, 72, of Bedford, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 27, 2010. She was born on Wednesday, Sept. 1, 1937, in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Joseph Benjamin Johnson and Nellie Mae Carter Johnson. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert Earl Lacy.

  • Eileen B. Beckman, Bedford

        Eileen Brent Beckman, daughter of Henry Mason and Rose O’Hara Brent, died peacefully Sunday, May 2, 2010. Born Aug. 20, 1918 in Bedford, she graduated from Bedford High School and St. Mary’s Junior College, Raleigh, North Carolina where she was a founding member of The Order of the Circle Sorority, and was a lifetime member of St. John’s Episcopal Church.

        She was the wife of Carl William Beckman who preceded her in death.

  • Frances T. Martin, 84, FL

    Frances Turner Martin, 84, passed away on April 30, 2010. She passed away at (her second home) Doctors Memorial Hospital, in Bonifay, after a long fight with cancer.

        Funeral services were Monday, May 03, 2010 at First Baptist Church in Bonifay with the Rev. Jeep Sullivan and the Rev. Steve Boroughs officiating. Interment followed in the Bonifay City Cemetery.

  • Betty R. Merriken, 82, Bedford

        Betty Roof Merriken, 82, of Bedford, passed away Thursday, April 29, 2010. She was born on Thursday, Feb. 2, 1928 in Roanoke, a daughter of the late Jeter Stratton Roof and Teressa Louise Willis Roof. She was also preceded in death by husband, William Hite Merriken and a brother, Jack Stuart Roof.

  • Arlene C. Payne, 81, Roanoke

        Arlene Joyce Collins Payne, 81, of Roanoke, died Sunday, May 2, 2010 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Born in Roanoke, on April 15, 1929, a daughter of the late Wiley Willard Collins and Mabel Marie Woods Collins. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband, Isaac Edward Payne; one sister Hazel Louise Collins Ayers.

  • Raymond Manning, 95, Bedford

        Raymond Manning, 95, of Bedford, passed away Tuesday, April 27, 2010, at Bedford County Nursing Home. He was born on Monday, Aug. 10, 1914, in Victoria, VA.

        Funeral services were held at the graveside at Fairmont Cemetery on Friday, April 30, 2010, at 9:30 a.m.

        Arrangements are being handled by Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.

  • Joyce M. Williams, 86, Goode

        Joyce M. Hawkins Williams, 86, of Goode, died Saturday, May 1, 2010 at Lynchburg General Hospital. Born in Bedford, Co., on March 22, 1924, a daughter of the late Thomas Glovier Hawkins and Bertha Jane Stone Hawkins. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Frank Winston Williams. Joyce was a member of Mt. Hermon Baptist Church. She was a Volunteer at the National D-Day Memorial, and a member of the Goode Rescue Squad Auxiliary.

  • Virginia C. Allen, 82, Bedford

        Virginia Cocke Allen, 82, of Bedford, died Saturday, April 24, 2010.  She was born in Bedford County on Dec. 31, 1927 a daughter of the late William Bryan Cocke and Annie Lillian Burch Cocke. She was owner of Allen Lumber Co. and a member of Center Point United Methodist Church. 

        In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, William Rucker Allen; a son, William Michael Allen; two sisters, Anne Arthur and Lois Falls.
