• Helen R. Parker, 78, Thaxton

        Helen Rosemary Parker, 78, of Thaxton, died Friday, March 26, 2010 in Roanoke Memorial Hospital.  She was born in Bedford County on April 22, 1931 a daughter of the late Elmer Ruff and Evie Phillips Rodgers.  In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two brothers, Burks Ruff and Bill Ruff; a sister, Louise Agee and five newborn babies. 

  • Andrew T. Skinnell, 75, Bedford

    Andrew Turner Skinnell, 75, of Bedford, died Thursday, March 25, 2010 at Oakwood Manor.  He was born in Bedford County on Feb. 13, 1935, son of the late James Teass Skinnell and Neva Davis Skinnell.  His wife was the late Violet Hayden Skinnell. 

        Mr. Skinnell was a retired employee of Gene Montgomery Construction Co and was an orchardist and farmer.

        He is survived by three sisters, Betty Ann Skinnell, Martha Lee Skinnell and Shelby Jean Mattox all of Bedford; also several nieces and nephews.

  • Ruth A. Overstreet, 85, Bedford

        Ruth Ashwell Overstreet, 85, of Bedford, passed away Sunday, March 28, 2010 at Bedford Memorial Hospital. She was born on Saturday, May 31, 1924 in Bedford Co., a daughter of the late Frank Leslie Ashwell and Lula Ann McBride Ashwell. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Rudolph Guy Overstreet whom she walks hand in hand together with in heaven now.

  • Johnny C. Scott, 52, Bedford

        Johnny C. Scott, 52, of Bedford, died Friday, March 26, 2010 at his home.  He was born in Bedford, on Oct. 17, 1957 a son of Doris Smith Scott of Bedford and the late John M. “Hubert” Scott.     

        He is survived by his sons, Brian and Justin Reed and daughter, Gwen. He is also survived by his sister, Carol Scott Campbell (John) and brother Hubert Lee Scott (Charlene). 

  • Frances T. Mitchell, 88, Huddleston

        Frances Turner Mitchell, 88, of Huddleston, passed away Saturday, March 27 while sleeping peacefully at her home at Smith Mountain Lake. She was born on Nov. 5,1921 in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Perry Davis and Lillie Frances Holdren Turner.  Frances was a lifelong teacher and retired from Virginia Western Community College.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmo T. Mitchell to whom she was married for 57 years and her brothers, Guy, Ralph, and Snow Turner.

  • Frank S. Waxter, 95, Huddleston

        Frank Shelby Waxter, 95, of Huddleston, died Wednesday, March 17, 2010, in Oakwood Manor.   He was born in Baltimore, Maryland on Oct. 29, 1914, a son of the late Milton Raymond Waxter and Fannie Ella Stallings Waxter. 

        He is survived by his wife, Ruth Virginia Meyer Waxter; a daughter, Lois Folkenberg; a son, Timothy Waxter; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. 

  • Melvin L. Hill, 69, Bedford

        Melvin Luther Hill, 69, of Bedford, passed away on Tuesday, March 23, 2010, at Avante at Roanoke Health Care Center. He was a son of the late Homer Burton Hill and Thelma Lee Wilmer Hill.     A funeral service was conducted from the graveside at Virginia Memorial Park on Friday, March 26, 2010, at 11 a.m.

        Arrangements are being handled by Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.

  • Mildred B. McLaughlin, 86, Vinton

        Mildred G. Bowling McLaughlin, was carried by God’s Angels to eternal rest on Tuesday, March 23, 2010. She was born on May 12, 1923, and was the first-born child of Lewis and Thelma Bowling of Bedford.

        Mildred was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, William Leroy McLaughlin; her parents; brothers: Robert and Mooreman Bowling; daughters: Mary Frances Joyner (Tom) and Wanda Fay Bondi.

  • Enoch H. Bruner, 78, Bedford

        Enoch Hargis Bruner, 78, died Saturday, March 20, 2010 at Avante of Roanoke after an extended illness with Alzheimer’s. He was born Nov. 22, 1931 in Ringwood, OK a son of the late Frank Dewey Bruner and Leona Josephine Hargis Bruner.  In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, Jim and Frank Bruner; and his only sister, Marilyn Bruner. 

        Enoch was a Navy Veteran and a member of Bedford Christian Church.  A devout Christian, Enoch loved the Lord and especially his family. 

  • Daniel D. Bruce, II., 61, Bedford

        Daniel David Bruce, II, 61, of Bedford, passed away on Saturday, March 20, 2010 at the University of Virginia Medical Center. He was a son of the late Daniel David Bruce, Sr. and Hattie Thomas Dudley Bruce of Lynchburg, who survives. In addition to his mother, he is survived by a daughter, Brooke Haley Bruce; a step-son, Aaron Armstrong; a sister, Barbara Mays.

        A funeral service was conducted on Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at 1 p.m. at Virginia Memorial Park.
