  • William M. Martin, 62, Hurt

    William Michael Martin, 62, of Hurt, Va formerly of Bedford, passed away Feb.12, 2010 at his residence. Born in Bedford on Oct. 21, 1947 he was the son of the late Reba Peters Martin and William Alfred Martin.

        He is survived by his wife, Darlene; one son, Shane, three daughters Kim, Stephanie and Connie, all of Hurt; one brother Thomas Martin of Bedford; two sisters Frances Dale of Sterling and Annette Martin of Bedford; five grandchildren and two step-grandchildren; nine nieces and nephews, and fourteen great nieces and nephews.

  • Michael W. Melton, 43, Valley Grande, AL

    Michael Wayne Melton, age 43, of Valley Grande, AL, passed away Feb. 28, 2010.

        He was preceded in death by mother, Bonnie Sue Dinwiddie; step-brother, John Pittman and step-sister, Sally P. Downs.

  • Alice S. Odom, 92, Bedford

    On Feb. 26, 2010 the angels came for Alice S. Odom of Bedford.  She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband of 66 years, Bob D. Odom and her daughters Carleen O. Vandegrift (Dr. George F. Vandegrift) of Crest Hill, IL; and Pamela Odom Jones (William Jones, Jr.) of Roanoke.  Also granddaughters, Joleen McCarty (Bradley) of Joliet, IL and Rachel Herod of Palatine, IL; and grandchildren Christopher and Shauna McCarty and Maxwell and Madeline Herod.  Several nieces and nephews also survive.

  • Elizabeth S. Murphy, 79, Moneta

    Elizabeth Ann “Betty” Salley Murphy, 79 of Moneta, passed away on Feb. 26, 2010 at Bedford Memorial Hospital. She was a daughter of the late William J. Salley and Charlotte Korte Salley.

        She is survived by two sons, Patrick J. Murphy and James W. Murphy.

        A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated on Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at 10 a.m. at Resurrection Catholic Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

  • Henry W. West, 98, Huddleston

    Henry Walter “Pete” West, 98 of Huddleston, passed away on Feb. 26, 2010 at Bedford Memorial Hospital. He was a son of the late James Allen West and Hattie Bertha Cundiff West.

        He is survived by his wife, Bevie Lee Wilkes West.

        A funeral service was conducted on Monday March 1, 2010 at 2 PM at Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

        Arrangements are being handled by Updike Funearl Home & Cremation Service, Huddleston.

  • Myrtle P. Dooley, 84, Bedford

        Myrtle Virginia Parker Dooley, 84, of Bedford, died Monday, Feb.  22, 2010 in Oakwood Manor.  She was born in Bedford County on Sept.  23, 1925 a daughter of the late Preston Henry Parker and Judson Virginia Overstreet Parker. 

        She attended Cool Spring Pentecostal Holiness Church.

        In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her son, David Lynn Dooley, her brothers, Leonard, John, Claude, Lonnie and Abner Parker; her sisters, Lizzie and Rita Parker. 

  • Anne P. Renner, 76, Huddleston

        Anne Olcott Palmer Renner, 76 of Huddleston, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 21, 2010 at the University of Virginia Hospital, Charlottesville. She was a daughter of the late Jordan Thomas Olcott and Margaret Shaw Olcott.

        She is survived by her husband, Arnold E. Renner; a son, Jordan B. Renner; and a daughter, Marcie Renner.

        A funeral service will be conducted on Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010 at 11 a.m. at Bethlehem United Methodist Church.

  • Francis J. Murdoch, Jr., Maj. Gen USA (Ret)

        Francis Johnstone Murdoch, Jr. Maj. Gen. USA (Ret.) died Sunday, Feb. 21, 2010.  The last surviving Battalion Commander of the D-Day landing at Normandy June 6,1944, General Murdoch was born in Tarboro, NC July 22,1912.   After spending 1 year at the University of North Carolina he attended the US Military Academy at West Point and graduated with the Class of 1935. Frank began his career as a US Cavalry officer under then Col. George S. Patton and was also a member of the US Olympic Equestrian Team in the war canceled 1940 Olympics.

  • Anastasia M. Joslyn, infant, Lynchburg

        Anastasia Marie Joslyn, infant daughter of Peter Arthur Joslyn and Erin Elizabeth Joslyn, of Lynchburg died on Thursday February 18, 2010 at Virginia Baptist Hospital in Lynchburg.

        In addition to her parents, Anastasia is survived by her maternal grandparents; David Carl Linton and Judy Mare Linton, of St. Louis, MO, and her paternal grandparents; Dr. Emerson Allen Joslyn and Susan Marie Joslyn, of Tappahannock.

  • Ruby T. Gardner, 74, Salem

        Ruby Jean Thomas Gardner, 74, of Salem, and formerly of Bedford County, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010. Jean was born on Sept. 7, 1935, to the late Walter S. Thomas and Betty Lee Lynch Thomas. She was also predeceased by a brother, James W. Thomas; and a sister, Nancy Wilkes.

        Jean retired from Medeco Lock Company of Salem after many years service.
