  • Four Bedford firefighters injured in accident

    Four firefighters were injured in an accident Saturday morning as they were responding to a call.
    At 11:52 a.m. Bedford Fire Department’s Engine 1 was involved in a single vehicle motor vehicle accident while en route to a reported brush fire in the 4100 block of Peaks Road.
    The call occurred just before the start of the Bedford Christmas Parade.

    Lost in the hubbub of the presidential campaign was a brilliant op-ed in the New York Times that made a very convincing argument for finally reducing excessive military spending.
        There’s a specific type of American, a product of our militaristic culture, that supports any and every war no matter what, always believes that America is morally correct in an automatic way once we start dropping bombs or landing troops somewhere.

        Since Election Day, a number of people have been looking for explanations about why Republicans failed to evict Barack Obama from the White House.
        One explanation is that the Republicans’ efforts to rally their base and get them to the polls wasn’t as effective as the “Democrats’” efforts. This explanation appears to have some merit because there are some statistics to back it and, in such a close election, whose base turns out in force can be the deciding factor.

    lot of folks set out this past week to begin marking off items from their Christmas lists.
        That’s good. It’s encouraging to see folks out and about and spending money.
        Just remember as you work your way through those Christmas lists to shop locally as you finish buying those packages for your family and friends this season.
         We owe it to our local merchants to show our support. Those businesses support us all year long.

         Carole Edwards and Jackie Werb drove to the Peaks of Otter on a gorgeous fall morning last week to take one last trip around Abbott Lake and have a final meal at the restaurant.
        The Peaks of Otter Lodge at milepost 86 on the Blue Ridge Parkway shut down this week. Last Thursday's Thanksgiving meal was the last large-scale event at the lodge, whose final guests checked out Monday morning.
