        And as she thinks of retiring, it isn’t always easy.
        “I have been blessed,” she said of her 20 years as principal at BMS. “It’s bitter sweet (to leave).”

  • Too wet to handle

        Last week’s rain fell far short of 40 days and 40 nights, but the four days of heavy rain created problems for almost everybody.

        A mud slide over the weekend closed one lane of U. S. 460 on the westbound side near its intersection with Va. 122.
        “The road is open and all is well,” said Jen Ward, a Virginia Department of Transportation spokesman in a phone interview on Monday afternoon.
        All was not well elsewhere.

  • 13 Cavaliers sign

    The front hallway of Jefferson Forest High School was filled with students and parents itching to get a good view of the Cavaliers’ monster signing for the 2018 class. Three tables were set up to hold 12 of the 13 students–one was not present–as they signed to continue their athletic career and education.

    Swimmers–Lizzy Braud, Brian Grimmett, Sutton Schonfelder and Caleb Rice–made up a third of the athletes present and got their own table.

  • Soccer: Light named Blue Ridge Player of the Year

    Five Staunton River Lady Golden Eagles found themselves on the first-team All-District list for the Blue Ridge District. At the top of that list was Abby Light who was named 2018 Blue Ridge District Player of the Year.

  • Softball: Jefferson Forest and Amherst set for rubber match on the diamond

    The Lady Cavaliers of Jefferson Forest (16-4) ride a six-game win streak into the opening round of the 4D Regional Softball Tournament. The Lady Cavaliers strong finish positions them as the No. 4 seed in the tournament and gives them a home game against  Seminole District rival and No. 5 seed Amherst County (15-6) in the tournament’s opening round.

    Josh Thomas put pen to paper and signed on to become a dual sport athlete at UVA-Wise joining the basketball team and the baseball team.

    “I visited and I really like the campus and the atmosphere of the place,” Thomas said.
