  • Dealing with trash

        Solid waste is not on the top of the list for interesting conversation for most people. But after a brief exchange with Vicki Esposito, solid waste becomes a hot topic.
        Esposito serves as the county’s solid waste programs manager. She is ideally suited for her occupation because she loves trash and recycling. She brings an air of enthusiasm and excitement to her profession. After even a brief visit with Esposito, it is obvious that she loves her job.

  • Softball: Walk-off!

    The Lady Minutemen dugout was full of screams with hands, bats and helmets banging on the fence. Across the field the Jefferson Forest dugout was quiet and focused. Everyone’s eyes focused on either Meghan O’Neil on the mound or Gracie Dooley in the batters box.
        

    Dooley stepped into the box with runners on second and third with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Jefferson Forest led 2-1.
        

  • Baseball: Staunton River blanks Franklin County in double-header

    The Golden Eagles defense was perfect on Monday May 7. The team did not allow a single Eagle from Franklin County to cross home plate in the either of the two games in Monday’s double-header.
        

    Staunton River (13-4) won the first game 5-0 and the second game 1-0.
      

  • Soccer: Cavs in driver seat for district's third seed

    Looking to rebound from a 3-1 loss to E.C. Glass, Jefferson Forest traveled to Liberty to take on the Minutemen in the second matchup of the season between the two teams.
        

    The Cavaliers were victorious, 3-0, in the first matchup and posted an identical score in the second matchup. Jefferson Forest defeated Liberty 3-0 to sweep the Minutemen this season.
        

  • Soccer: Lord Botetourt edges Staunton River for district lead

    The championship level atmosphere was apparent from the start, as it should’ve been. The Blue Ridge District’s two best teams collided with the winner taking the district lead, and likely the district championship.
        

    In the first matchup on April 13 Staunton River travelled to Lord Botetourt and the two teams battled it out to a tie. On Friday May 4 Lord Botetourt scored the lone goal and defeated Staunton River 1-0.
        

  • Golf: SMLCA notches two all-state finishers

    William Keep and Zoey Nichols each represented the Smith Mountain Lake Christian Academy Ospreys at the VACA State Golf Championship.
        

    Keep, a star player for the Ospreys basketball team, concluded his senior year finishing seventh overall in the men’s section of the tournament.
        

  • Baseball: Jefferson Forest picks up two district wins

    The Jefferson Forest Cavaliers had three Seminole District games on the schedule this week. The Cavaliers defeated E.C. Glass 9-7 on Tuesday May 1 and on Friday May 4 Brookville 6-4 before losing to Amherst County 3-2 on Monday May 7.
    Jefferson Forest utilized a four-run fifth inning against E.C. Glass to propel them past the Hilltoppers.
        

  • Track and Field: May 2-5 Highlights

    Liberty–The Minutemen competed in the Cosmopolitan Invitational Track Meet at William Fleming this weekend. The men’s team finished seventh overall in the senior division (24 points) and 14th  (10 points) in the junior division. The women’s team finished 17th (2 points) in the senior division and 14th (3 points) in the junior division.
