  • The Bedford PD supports DRIVE SMART effort

Buckle Up, Phone Down is the theme as the Bedford Police Department joins DRIVE SMART Virginia in supporting Distracted Driving Awareness Month.
“We call on all drivers in Bedford to avoid any distraction when they’re driving,” Bedford Police Chief James Day warns. “With the number of people I see focused on a phone, and not on the road, distracted driving has really turned into a serious problem. I worry about traffic safety everyday and I wonder when people will begin to realize the true dangers of distracted driving?”

  • Rooting out waste at the Department of Justice

As the March 1 sequestration deadline approached, Attorney General Eric Holder dramatically warned that the Department of Justice (DOJ) would be forced to make cuts that threaten the safety of all Americans. Holder claimed that cuts to agencies within the Justice Department would diminish the department’s ability to investigate and prosecute crimes.

  • Here it comes: The Chinese Century

I hope no one is losing too much sleep over whether the young leader of North Korea is going to attack us, or even South Korea, any time soon.
Despite the big noises made by Kim Jong-Un, the world’s diplomatic players have seen this movie before.

  • A proof text out of context

There’s an old saying: A proof text out of context is a pretext. The idea is that one should always check the context of a Bible verse that someone has quoted to prove a point. Checking the context of a verse means reading the passage that it was pulled from. It also means checking other parts of the Bible that address the same topic, letting Scripture interpret Scripture.

  • When tragedy strikes

    It was a gruesome scene.
Just before 3 p.m. Monday afternoon, as the second half of the 23,000 runners participating in the Boston Marathon continued to make their way to the finish line, two bombs went off at the end of that 26.2-mile course.
At least three people were killed; more than 140 injured.
It was mass carnage—and mass confusion.
Many of those injured were children; an 8-year-old child was among those killed.

    A fair voice

Recently the County Board of Supervisors, as part of the City’s reversion process, voted to absorb the future Town residents into two existing county districts. By so doing, the future Town residents will simply be diluted into the two county districts which will result in the Town residents having no effective voice in how we are governed.

  • Reducing the tax burden

Tax season is upon us once again. As April 15th creeps closer, families and businesses are scrambling to meet the filing deadline for 2012 tax returns. For many that means a mountain of paperwork, hefty fees for tax preparation, and a headache from navigating the outdated, needlessly complex tax code. The U.S. tax code is so complicated that roughly 9 out of 10 Americans use paid professionals or commercial software to prepare their tax returns.
