  • Everyone can participate in Statewide Tornado Drill

During the past two years, 62 tornadoes hit Virginia, killing 10 people and injuring more than 200.  Some 210 homes were destroyed, and more than 1,050 were damaged.  Nearly every part of the state was affected.

  • Finding Faith in Bedford

    By Nicole F. Ashman

We were given a wonderful opportunity and a night of information and enjoyment when Word of Life Evangelical Church opened its doors to over two hundred people in Bedford Sunday night.
The general public was invited to view the movie Finding Faith. Finding Faith is a full-length narrative motion picture.  This film is a faith-based production that included Erik Estrada starring as the Sheriff of the Bedford County Police Department.

  • Hagel, McCain, and wars of choice

There’s an old saying about elephants having a long memory, which certainly makes them an appropriate symbol for Republicans in the U.S. Senate.
They don’t forget; and they don’t forgive, either. They proved it at confirmation hearings for one of their own, former Senator Chuck Hagel, whom the president has nominated to be Secretary of Defense.

  • Will you please stop whining!

A delegation from the teachers’ union showed up at last week’s board of supervisors meeting to whine about their pay. What a tragic tale they told! Maybe they should have brought somebody in to play sad music as their woeful story unfolded.
“It’s just not possible to get to the end of the month on their salary,” whined one teachers’ union representative.

  • This is ridiculous

A Virginia inmate wants a sex change operation. And he wants Virginia taxpayers to foot the bill.
        This is ridiculous.
The inmate now goes by the name Ophelia De’lonta, and has apparently been diagnosed with gender identity disorder.
De’lonta believes she is trapped in the body of the opposite sex. But, more importantly, De’lonta is being held captive by another entity, the Virginia court system. She has been incarcerated since 1983, serving a 73-year sentence for bank robbery.

  • Letters 01/30/31

    Bill should be voted down

Del. Dave Albo (R-Springfield) has introduced a bill (H2253) in the General Assembly that would repeal the state’s Land Preservation Tax Credit (LPC) to fund transportation. The Blue Ridge Land Conservancy stands firmly opposed to this bill and any others that would repeal or lessen the impact of the LPC.

  • Who’s counting?

Need an example of why the government doesn’t need any more of your money? Take a look at the Superstorm Sandy relief measure, expected to pass Congress soon.
The final $50 billion in emergency aid will eat up, and surpass, the money funded through the recently approved, “fiscal cliff” tax increases.
The fact is, the cliff just keeps getting taller.
