Today's Opinions

  • Trump made economy great again

President Donald Trump’s policies have made America’s economy grow and this rising tide has lifted most boats.
Hispanic unemployment, now at 4.5 percent, is the lowest it has been since the Bureau of Labor Standards started tracking it 45 years ago. Construction hiring is booming and the federal labor department said, two weeks ago, that there are 315,000 more people working in the industry than there were a year ago. It’s reached the point where contractors are having trouble filling jobs in skilled trades.

Kaine will fight for low health care costs

As politics are an integral part of our lives, on election day we are given the opportunity to elect candidates  who best reflect our concerns. Mine is affordable health care. I suspect it is for most.
Corey Stewart has expressed little concern for this troubling issue, while Senator Tim Kaine has made it clear he will continue to fight ever-increasing health care costs. I believe him.

  • Kavanaugh fiasco angers women even more

After the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, one thing has become clear about the national Republican Party.
There are basically only two groups left in the GOP now: old white men and religious fanatics. The traditional “country club Republicans” have been eclipsed by the worst elements in American life.

  • Too soon to speculate

I’ve seen, off and on for months, occasional speculations about who the so called “Democrats” may run against President Donald Trump in 2020. Right now this sort of speculation is very premature.

  • It’s time for a vote

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has promised there will be a vote this week on  the Supreme Court nomination of Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh.
        It’s about time.
Whichever side of the aisle you sit on, this vetting of the candidate has gone on long enough.
It didn’t have to be this way.

Has anyone seen the Bedford County VDOT lately?
We have had an unusually wet season with some hard showers and no way for the water to get off the road. Most ditches haven’t been cleaned for at least 30 years with the shoulders two to three inches higher than the pavement which has created a new ditch at the edge of the payment. This is very dangerous and is causing a lot of young inexperienced drivers to flip over when they run off the edge and over correct.

  • Trump’s policies don’t justify him

There’s a mentality on the right these days – expressed on this page recently – that, yes, we know what an awful person Donald Trump is, but his policies are good and worthy of support. No, they’re not.
Where do I start? Well, it’s illegal immigration that has generated the most heat from this awful regime. But as a serious issue, it’s extremely over-rated.
