  • Softball: Liberty tops Staunton River in historic matchup

    Never before had two teams from Bedford County played in the VHSL state softball tournament. That piece of history was rewritten on Tuesday June 5 as Staunton River took on Liberty at Liberty.

  • Softball: Back-to-back walk-offs secure 3C Regional Championship

    Just when it looked like the Liberty High School softball team had run out of gas, the girls reminded everyone of the strength and grit they have—enough to win Liberty’s first ever regional championship.
        

    “We’ve had so many come-from-behind type games, nothing like quite to this extent, but they’ve been that type of team this year,” said Coach Mike Thompson.
        

  • Soccer: Jefferson Forest captures 4D Regional Championship

    Hugs and cheers filled the Jefferson Forest sideline following at 2-1 victory over Blacksburg to capture the 4D Girls Soccer Regional Championship.

     

    The body language of the Lady Cavaliers remained poised and controlled. As great as a regional championship is they know it is merely a stepping-stone on their quest to repeat as 4A State Champions.

     

  • Softball: Staunton River stuns Tunstall to capture berth in 3A State Tournament

    Coming off a convincing 7-1 win over Abingdon in the opening round of the 3D Regional Tournament Staunton River stood face-to-face with the region’s equivalent to  Goliath.
        

    Top seeded Tunstall, a team that demolished Magna Vista 21-4 in the tournament’s opening round, entered the game averaging 11.15 runs per outing while holding opponents to just five runs.

    Staunton River’s Grayson Overstreet and Liberty’s Rebecca Hensley each added a few more accolades to their already superb senior seasons. Overstreet and Hensley were the recipients of the Grand Award, the highest award offered at this year’s Bedford Rotary Awards. Along with that Hensley took home honors in the girls basketball and softball categories while Overstreet also took home honors in the football category.
