To start the season the main goal for the Smith Mountain Lake Christian Academy (SMLCA) Ospreys was simple–win the VACA State Championship. Achieving that goal would be easier said than done for the Ospreys.

The basketball season officially starts in November but the Ospreys began this year’s journey much earlier. The team started to get familiar with one another in June.

The last time the Jefferson Forest Cavaliers made it to the VHSL state tournament every player on this year’s team was still in diapers and head coach Cameron Shepherd was getting set to enter high school as a freshman. It has been 16 years since the Cavaliers battled Martinsville in the 2002 AA state quarterfinal.

“It really puts it into persecutive on just how long it’s been,” Shepherd said.
