Just when it looked like the Liberty High School softball team had run out of gas, the girls reminded everyone of the strength and grit they have—enough to win Liberty’s first ever regional championship.

“We’ve had so many come-from-behind type games, nothing like quite to this extent, but they’ve been that type of team this year,” said Coach Mike Thompson.

Hugs and cheers filled the Jefferson Forest sideline following at 2-1 victory over Blacksburg to capture the 4D Girls Soccer Regional Championship.

The body language of the Lady Cavaliers remained poised and controlled. As great as a regional championship is they know it is merely a stepping-stone on their quest to repeat as 4A State Champions.

It had been nine days since Jefferson Forest’s last game, a nail biting 1-0 victory over Liberty in the opening round of the district tournament. The Cavaliers struggled to get runners on base in that matchup. Against Pulaski County in the opening round of the 4D Regional Tournament the Cavaliers had no such struggle.

One goal would have been enough for the Lady Minutemen soccer team to defeat Brookville. Instead, the Liberty offense put eight balls in the back of Brookville's net and cruised to an 8-0 victory to advance to the semi-finals of the 3C Regional Tournament.

Freshman Lydia Young struck five minutes in off the pass from Delaney Snead. Shortly after Young again found the back of the net to give Liberty a 2-0 lead.
